A nailles construction? / Без единого гвоздя?

You can often hear that the Church of the Transfiguration of Our Savior was built without a single nail. And that’s the truth. At the time of its construction, they really didn’t use a single gram of metal for it. Even nowadays, the elements of the log frame are connected by a complex system of grooves and tenons. Shingles and decorative elements were attached to the log frame with wooden nails.
The reason of a nailless constriction is high cost, poor quality and low availability of iron at the time of the Church construction. At the beginning of the 18 th century in Zaonezhie one could exchange a cow for a kilogram of nails. Over time, high-quality metal became more affordable and forged nails replaced the nails.
Часто можно услышать, что Церковь Преображения Господня Кижского погоста построена без единого гвоздя. И это чистая правда. В момент постройки в ней действительно не было ни грамма металла. Бревна сруба и по сей день соединяются сложной системой пазов и шипов, а лемех и декоративные элементы прикреплялись к срубу деревянными нагелями. Причина проста — высокая дороговизна, плохое качество и низкая доступность железа. В начале XVIII века на килограмм гвоздей в Заонежье можно было выменять корову. Со временем качественный металл стал доступнее и на смену нагелям пришли кованные гвозди.
